What Do All These Acronyms Mean?
A Simple Guide to Dogue de Bordeaux Registries

So many acronyms - how does one know what they mean and what is the best choice for the Dogue de Bordeaux in the USA? Below are the answers....

Primary Registry Recommended by the DDBSA: AKC - American Kennel Club
The DDBSA advises owners and breeders of all domestic Dogue de Bordeaux to register with the AKC as their primary registration. The AKC will no longer accept UKC registration for the Dogue de Bordeaux. If your dog is an import, the DDBSA advises all owners and breeders to transfer their paperwork over to AKC as soon as possible. (please read "Registration Status" below).

Please note that the DDBSA does NOT register dogs. This information has been given to some people by the AKC in error.

The DDBSA is very proud to be chosen by the AKC as the Parent Breed Club for the Dogue de Bordeaux. As of July 1, 2008 the Dogue de Bordeaux is an offical AKC breed in the working group. Please see the page "AKC News and Updates" for further information regarding registration.

Other Registries for the Dogue de Bordeaux

The AKC will accept ONLY FCI paperwork for imported dogs into their database (please see the AKC website at http://www.akc.org/rules/special_registry_services.cfm?page=5 for specific country requirements). For domestic born Dogues de Bordeaux, if the parents do not currently have AKC registration, they are ineligible to be registered with the AKC. (please read "Registration Status" below for complete information). The DDBSA advises all Dogue de Bordeaux owners and breeders to be using the AKC as their primary registration body for domestic Dogue de Bordeaux.

UKC
United Kennel Club
The second oldest registry for dogs in the USA. The UKC recognized the Dogue de Bordeaux in 1995. You must be registered UKC to show in UKC events also. For more information, contact the UKC at 616-343-9020 or view their website at www.ukcdogs.com. Dogues de Bordeaux with only UKC registration are not eligible for AKC registration. Please check with your breeder to inquire if your dogs parents are AKC registered and the possibility of registering your dog(s) AKC.

USBC
United States Bordeaux Corporation
The USBC registry is closed and is no longer registering dogs. The USBC registry has been turned over to the AKC.

FCI
Federation Cynologique Internationale
The FCI is the governing body of registries around the world (with the exception of some countries such as the USA). Each country has its own registry (i.e. FCPR is Federation Canines Puerto Rico; LOF is Livre France; etc). You will be able to tell an FCI governed registry by their use of the official FCI seal on their paperwork. Only dogs born in FCI countries of FCI parents are registered FCI. Most imports are FCI registered. The FCI website can be found at www.fci.be.

Registration Status:
Now that the Dogue de Bordeaux has attained full 100% AKC recognition and has moved into the Working Group, all dogs in the FSS database that have three generation pedigrees from approved registries (see acceptable registry list previously noted) were automatically issued an AKC registration number and certificate (dogs under 10 years of age only).

Those Dogue de Bordeaux that do not have thee generations of approved registries (i.e. pedigrees including any FIC dogs) will remain in the FSS database indefinitely or until (if ever) a three generation pedigree of acceptable registries entirely, is achieved. These dogs with the FSS numbers only may enter and compete in regular AKC companion events only. Dogues with only AKC-FSS registration MAY NOT BE SHOWN in AKC. They are not eligible to compete in any AKC conformation events and any offspring produced by these dogs, will be ineligible for full registration with the AKC and offered the same competitions, companion events only. The DDBS and AKC representatives will be available to answer your questions and concerns, as well as facilitate any problems that may arise.

Other Registries
The following registries are not recognized by the AKC or the DDBSA. Use of these registries is not recommended in ANY capacity. The DDBSA advises against purchasing Dogue de Bordeaux puppies or adults, or contracting with Studs who are registered with any of these registries. The AKC will not accept any of these registration bodies into the AKC. The DDBSA has been advising owners and breeders of the pending acceptance into AKC for many years and stressing the transfer of registration to AKC.
