Dogue de Bordeaux Measurements

Purpose:
The DDBS began measuring the 1) height, 2) chest circumference, 3) head circumference and 4) weight* of all Dogues de Bordeaux entered in the DDBS National Specialty Shows in 1999 (second national specialty). This process is used to measure growth and averages of the breed in the United States of America and Canada and as a learning tool for breeders and owners.

All dogs are required to be measured prior to participating in the DDBS National Specialty Show, dogs not measured will not be allowed to compete (effective March 2001).

This is not a competition and shall not be considered such. There is no award or public recognition for the largest, biggest, or heaviest Dogue de Bordeaux or their parts.

Process:
Dogs are measured in accordance to observations made at international shows. A WICKET in feet and inches is used to determine height at the withers. A SCALE in pounds and ounces is used to measure weight, a CLOTH TAPE MEASURE in feet and inches is used for the head and chest measurements.

Height: Dog is standing on all fours and is measured at the withers.

Head: Circumference of head in front of ears with tape measure pulled lightly.

Chest: Circumference of chest from behind elbows with tape measure pulled lightly

Weight: If a scale is available, weight will be taken.  If the club is unable to secure a scale, all other measurements will be taken without weight.
Dog is fully on scale with all four legs and paws. (note: If dog will not stand on scale, the dog may be placed in a crate on the scale - the crate must be preweighted and the difference subtracted)

As of May 2000, only designated Board Members shall do all measuring and weighing for a determined amount of time at the national specialty show.

The averages will be published in the (Bi)Monthly Slobber within one year of the National Specialty show and on the DDBS website.

As of 2004, the DDBS feels that it has sufficient numbers to compile usable averaged.  Individual dog measurements will no longer be published.
